World Health Day Highlight: Free Screenings for Teachers
Written by EDYOU FM Staff on April 7, 2026

Health can be defined as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. It represents a dynamic balance of body and mind, allowing individuals to adapt to life’s challenges. It is often used to describe the overall condition of a person, organism, or system. As we observe World Health Day on April 7, we highlight the Ministry of Health’s collaboration with the Ministry of Education to offer comprehensive health screenings to teachers.
The Ministry of Health continues to host outreach programs nationwide while promoting the Universal Health Vouchers (spectacles, eye tests, and cervical cancer screening). Recently, the Ministry collaborated with the Ministry of Education to offer teachers health services such as Weight & Height Measurement, Blood Pressure & Blood Sugar Testing, Physical Examination, Breast Examination, Spectacles Vouchers, HPV Screening Vouchers, and Blood Testing Vouchers. This partnership with the Ministry of Education serves as a timely reminder and encouragement to teachers across the country to prioritise their health and well-being.
The noble teaching profession requires immense commitment and dedication. Teachers work tirelessly to ensure the development of our nation’s children. Their work is physically, mentally and emotionally demanding. Thus, it is prudent that teachers make their health a priority.
Core Benefits of Maintaining Health for Teachers
Disease Prevention and Longevity: Regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and preventive care significantly lower the risk of chronic conditions like Heart Disease, Type 2 Diabetes, and cancers. This proactive approach helps you to lead a longer healthier career and life.
Mental and Emotional Stability: Physical and mental health are deeply connected. For example, exercise releases endorphins that reduce stress and boost mood. Good mental health enables you to realize your physical potential, handle life’s stresses, and maintain healthy relationships with students, parents and colleagues.
Energy and Productivity: Rest is essential for good health. Rest restores the body, resulting in better focus, increased endurance, and higher productivity at work.
Financial and Social Security: Maintaining good health decreases personal medical costs and ensures that you are able to show up for your students and support your family and community.
With these benefits in mind, we urge our teachers to prioritise their health and take advantage of this Teacher’s Screening Initiative. Follow @Ministry of Education-Guyana or @Ministry of Health-Guyana on Facebook for more updates.
