Taking Education to Every Corner of Guyana

Written by on July 9, 2026

For decades, Distance Education has been quietly transforming lives by ensuring that geography is never a barrier to learning. From the coastland to the hinterland, across rivers and remote communities, educational broadcasting has played a vital role in bringing quality learning opportunities to thousands of Guyanese.

Our journey has been one of innovation and commitment. In April 2011, the Educational Television Broadcasting Service (ETBS) was officially launched by His Excellency Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo under the vision of “Taking Education to all Corners of Guyana.” That vision laid the foundation for what would become one of the country’s most important educational initiatives.

The story of Distance Education, however, began even earlier. It was built on the dedication of pioneers such as Celeste Dolphin, whose remarkable 36 years of service in educational broadcasting helped shape generations of learners through programmes such as Broadcasts to Schools and Talking About Education. Her legacy continues to inspire everyone committed to expanding educational access throughout Guyana.

Today, that legacy lives on through the Guyana Learning Channel and the Distance Education Unit of the Ministry of Education. As education continues to evolve, so too does our mission. We remain committed to producing and delivering high-quality curriculum-aligned content, supporting teachers and learners, and strengthening the Ministry’s vision through initiatives such as the Guyana Digital School.

Distance Education is more than television, radio or digital platforms, it is a promise that every child, regardless of where they live, deserves access to quality education. As we honour our past, we continue building a future where learning reaches every community, every home, and every learner.
