On Saturday, 26th April 2025, the Literacy Department of Region Four in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport hosted an activity in observance of World Book and Copyright Day. The event, which was held at the National Park in Georgetown, was attended by scores of students from across the education district, including private schools.

According to Regional Literacy Coordinator (Region 4) Cindy Singh, the World Book Day event aimed to “inspire everyone to be a reader, to share their experiences through books, incorporating play and learning [through] interactive games to stimulate the interest of everyone to read, write and learn”.

The event, hosted by popular radio personality Sophia Dolphin, featured an exhibition of games and learning aids created by teachers from schools all across Education District Four. These games, Singh explained, seek to eliminate illiteracy by focusing on the Five Big Ideas in reading: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Reading Comprehension. The participants were also treated to a cinematograph display which highlighted authentic Guyanese imagery to enhance storytelling, as well as a puppet show.

While this year’s World Book Day event was intended to spark a passion for reading, it was dampened by the devastating loss of Adrianna Younge. During the programme, the attendees, including children, parents, educators, and officials, paused to honor the memory of the 11-year-old Adrianna Younge. “Her tragic passing”, said Singh, “has profoundly affected our nation, reminding us all of the importance of safety and well-being for every child”.
