The Migrant Education Support Unit (MESU) of the Ministry of Education has been intensifying its efforts to integrate learners who don’t speak English into the classroom by eliminating language barriers. For three weeks into the August vacation period, non-native learners, particularly those who speak Spanish, were engaged in fun activities to improve their English language skills.

First, the after-school English as a Second Language (ESL) classes were extended for two additional weeks, July 8 to 19, for learners in regions 1, 2, 3 4, 7, 9 and Georgetown.

Then, on Monday, July 15, 2024, MESU launched its inaugural ESL Adventure Camp for learners between the ages of 6 and 14 at ten schools across the country:

Region 1 – Mabaruma Primary School

Region 2 – Charity Primary School

Region 3 – Belle West Primary & Meten Meer Zorg Primary School

Region 4 – Diamond Primary, Enterprise Primary and Supply Primary

Georgetown – JE Burnham Primary, Ketley Primary and Smith Memorial Primary Schools.

The ESL Adventure Camp was hosted under the theme: “Strengthening Migrant Integration and Improving Student Performance in Government Schools”. The two-week camp provided linguistic and psychosocial support to returning Guyanese, Venezuelans and other migrant children through ESL and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) interventions.

The 450+ migrant learners enrolled in the camp responded positively to the interactive small-group sessions which were designed to improve their linguistic, artistic, social, and emotional skills. The inaugural ESL Adventure Camp concluded on Friday, July 26, 2024.
