Recognising the importance of both physical and mental well-being, staff of the Ministry of Education’s Distance Education Unit participated in a special yoga session in observance of International Day of Yoga and Father’s Day, both of which were celebrated on June 21. The activity brought together male staff members for an opportunity to focus on self-care, stress management, and overall wellness through guided yoga exercises led by instructor Ms. Tracey Smith.

During the session, Smith highlighted the importance of maintaining a healthy mind-body balance, noting that yoga can improve concentration, reduce stress, and enhance mental clarity. Participants were guided through a series of exercises designed to promote relaxation, mindfulness, and physical well-being.

Reflecting on the experience, EdYouFM radio personality Nickose Layne described the initiative as both timely and necessary, particularly as it created space for discussions surrounding men’s mental health and the support provided to fathers. He noted that workplace activities such as the yoga session are important because employees often manage personal challenges and responsibilities outside of their professional duties. “Having a space like this in a workplace allows workers to relieve some of that stress,” Layne said, while encouraging persons to make time for their own well-being despite the demands of daily life.
For animator Josiah Hooper, the activity offered a different approach to wellness. While accustomed to regular gym workouts, he explained that yoga allowed him to slow down, focus on the present moment, and pay greater attention to his mental health. “When you do yoga, there are quiet moments where you get to close your eyes, stretch, embrace the moment, and you actually feel different,” he shared. Hooper also encouraged others to take simple steps toward improving their physical and mental well-being, noting that activities such as yoga, walking, or jogging can be incorporated into everyday routines.
This session served as a reminder that health extends beyond physical fitness and that taking time to care for one’s mental well-being is equally important. By combining the observance of International Day of Yoga and Father’s Day, the activity reinforced the value of self-care, mindfulness, and healthy lifestyles among staff.
