Digital & Learning Week: AI and the Future of Education

Written by on September 8, 2025

Digital Learning week is an annual observance that explores the evolving role of technology in education. This year’s spotlight falls on the powerful intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and learning highlighting both the opportunities and dilemmas that come with integrating digital tools into the classroom and beyond. The focus is on AI and the Future of Education: Disruptions, Dilemmas, and Directions, calls on educators, policymakers, and learners to reflect on how AI can be used responsibly and inclusively.

At its core Digital & Learning Week  poses  these vital questions:

How can digital innovation enhance access to quality education?

  • What ethical safeguards are needed as AI becomes part of everyday learning?

  • How do we prepare students for a future where digital literacy is as essential as reading and writing?

Why It Matters for Guyana

For Guyana, Digital Week resonates deeply. As the nation continues to expand access to Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in schools, equip teachers with digital tools, and create pathways for young people to thrive in a tech-driven world.

One of the most exciting developments is the Caribbean Examinations Council’s (CXC) announcement that AI will be permitted in CSEC School-Based Assessments (SBAs) from 2026. This policy shift marks a new era ensuring that students are not just passive users of AI, but active, responsible learners who know how to harness it for research, creativity, and problem-solving.

The Promise and Risks of AI in Education

With the advancement of AI, educational opportunities are limitless but with these new developments there are also  risks.

These Benefits include:

  • Personalized learning: AI can adapt to each student’s strengths and weaknesses, providing targeted support.

  • Enhanced engagement: Students can learn in formats that match their preferences quizzes, videos, visuals, or interactive simulations.

  • Education for all: AI can support diverse classrooms, from students with disabilities to those learning in different languages.

  • Efficiency for teachers: Automating routine tasks like grading or lesson drafting frees up more time for teaching.

  • Boosting creativity and critical thinking: AI can generate scenarios or prompts that encourage students to think deeply and originally.

Now let’s take a look at the risks:

  • Over-reliance on AI: Students may let technology do their work instead of developing real skills.

  • Academic dishonesty: Plagiarism and shortcutting learning are real concerns.

  • Digital divide: Unequal access to technology could leave some students behind.

  • Data privacy: Student information must be safeguarded.

  • Loss of human skills: Skills like empathy, collaboration, and communication cannot be replaced by machines.

Tips for Using AI Responsibly

It is essential to embrace these new opportunities while using them with caution, educators and students can adopt mindful practices such as using AI as a guide, not a substitute at the risk of your own ideas. Ensure that you always verify your information with trusted sources, students should let AI spark creativity but always write in their  own words. And lastly, focus on building skills that machines can’t with your creativity, empathy, and problem solving skills.  For teachers, create assignments that encourage originality and collaboration, ensure to teach students how to ask good, high end questions, and create a balanced digital learning  space with activities that build social and motor skills.

Digital & Learning Week is more than a celebration of technology; it’s a call to action. AI is already transforming how we learn and teach, but how we guide its use will determine whether it deepens inequality or opens doors of opportunities. It is important to note that AI is not here to replace us, it is here to work alongside us, helping students think more critically, explore more deeply, and create more meaningfully. Education, after all, has always been about curiosity, growth, and connection. That’s something no machine can replicate.
