Written by on September 18, 2026

The Ministry of Education’s Distance Education Unit (DEU) took education beyond the traditional classroom through its participation in the Amerindian Heritage Village event in Bumbury, Region One.

The DEU’s participation provided an opportunity to engage directly with residents while supporting an activity celebrating Indigenous culture, traditions and community life as part of Amerindian Heritage Month.

Throughout the event, the DEU engaged with the Bumbury community and experienced the heritage and traditions being showcased. The Heritage Village provided a space for the Unit to connect with residents and visitors and gain insight into the knowledge, experiences and cultural practices that form an important part of community life.

Minister of Education Sonia Parag was among the officials who visited the Heritage Village, alongside Minister of Amerindian Affairs Sarah Browne-Shadeek, Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips and Minister of Housing Collin Croal.

For the DEU, the engagement highlighted the strong connection between education, culture and community. It shows that learning does not only take place within the walls of a classroom, it can also happen through the knowledge, traditions and experiences shared within communities and passed from one generation to the next.

The participation also reflected the DEU’s continued efforts to connect with communities across Guyana and support learning in diverse settings. Through community-based engagements, the Unit creates opportunities to interact with residents while reinforcing the idea that education can take many forms.

The DEU’s involvement further supported the wider objectives of Amerindian Heritage Month, which celebrates the culture, traditions and contributions of Guyana’s Indigenous peoples.

Through its participation in the Bumbury Heritage Village, the DEU continues to bring education closer to communities, creating opportunities to engage, connect and learn beyond the classroom.
