From April 14 to 16, 2026, the Ministry of Education’s Distance Education Unit (DEU) took its “Classroom Connect” initiative to schools across Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), offering students an interactive look at its educational programming and national reach.
Three secondary schools, Corentyne Comprehensive High, Tagore Memorial Secondary, and Berbice High, were selected for their geographic advantage, allowing easy access for neighboring institutions. Coordination at each site was led by key educators: Dr. Nirmala Samaroo at Corentyne Comprehensive High, Sabrina Ramrattan and Eve Dyal at Tagore Memorial Secondary, and Zahir Moakan at Berbice High.

Over the three days, attendance exceeded 100 students daily, with participants rotating through a range of engaging, competition-driven activities. Among the highlights were Plinko, Memory Game, Spell It, Animation, and an Introduction to the Basics of Photography. Each station drew enthusiastic crowds, with students demonstrating sharp focus and healthy competitive spirit.
One of the featured stations, Introduction to the Basics of Photography, offered students practical guidance on improving mobile photography. They also explored the use of a mirrorless handheld camera. The response was immediate and energetic, as students eagerly applied techniques in real time.

On the final day, April 16, three students attending the Berbice High School location distinguished themselves during the photography exercise. Shaquena Billingy, Stacy Fraser, and Jinellie Sampson demonstrated both creativity and adaptability as they alternated between roles as subject and photographer. After receiving detailed visual and verbal instruction, they were challenged to capture a macro image of a camera lens brand name using the techniques taught. The student whose image most closely matched the instructor’s reference shot was awarded a prize.
The Classroom Connect initiative continues its outreach on April 28, when the Distance Education Unit is scheduled to host its next engagement at the Bamia Multipurpose Hall in Region Ten, extending its mission to connect students with innovative, technology-driven learning experiences.
