Beyond the Classroom: The Story Behind Guyana’s 2026 Examination Results

Written by on September 9, 2026

Behind every Grade One, every pass and every improvement is a student who prepared, a teacher who guided and a support system that helped make learning possible.

Guyana’s preliminary 2026 Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) results show encouraging movement across the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC), Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) and Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ).

At CSEC, 13,052 students wrote examinations this year, compared with 12,685 in 2025. The number of candidates achieving eight or more Grade Ones also increased, with 264 students reaching that benchmark in the preliminary results.

Mathematics, one of the country’s longstanding areas of focus, also recorded an improvement. The national pass rate increased from 32 per cent in 2025 to 34.5 per cent in 2026, while 23 of the 35 CSEC subjects recorded improved performance. These gains come alongside targeted interventions designed to provide students with additional opportunities to learn and practise, including virtual teaching, learning materials and Mathematics Tents that connected experienced teachers with students, including those in hinterland communities.

But support for examination preparation does not only happen inside the school system.

This is where the Ministry of Education’s Distance Education Unit (DEU) plays an important role. Through its two platforms (the Guyana Learning Channel (GLC) and EdYou FM ), the DEU extends the reach of education through television, radio and digital platforms, creating additional opportunities for students to access learning resources beyond the school day.

For CSEC students, the GLC has been an important avenue for Mathematics support, offering intervention lessons and curriculum-based content that students can use to reinforce concepts and revisit areas they may find challenging.

The value of this approach is simple: a lesson does not have to end when the classroom period ends. A student can return to a Mathematics concept through a GLC lesson, practise what they have learned and use additional resources to strengthen their understanding.

The DEU’s work also extends beyond traditional examination preparation. In March, the Unit launched Verse in Motion: The Animated CSEC Poetry Project, bringing poems from the CSEC English Literature syllabus to life through animation. By combining literature, storytelling and visual media, the project offers students a fresh and engaging way to connect with material they are expected to understand for examinations.

The DEU’s contribution is part of a much larger national effort to ensure students have access to the support they need. At CAPE, 666 students wrote examinations in 2026, compared with 650 in 2025. Meanwhile, approximately 2,813 students are expected to gain Caribbean Vocational Qualifications, with training spanning areas such as construction, electrical installation, welding, motor vehicle repairs, agro-processing and food preparation.

These results reinforce another important reality: there is more than one pathway to success.

For some students, success means excelling at CSEC. For others, it means progressing through CAPE or developing technical and vocational skills that prepare them for the workforce. And across these pathways, access to learning remains essential.

The 2026 results are preliminary, but they provide an opportunity to look beyond the percentages. They tell a story of students striving, teachers supporting and an education system continuing to find new ways to reach learners.

For the Distance Education Unit, that means creating content that can meet students wherever learning happens , whether through a Mathematics intervention on the Guyana Learning Channel, an educational programme on EdYou FM, a digital resource or an animated CSEC poem.

The DEU is not replacing the classroom. It is extending it. And that may be one of the most important stories behind Guyana’s 2026 examination results.
