BAMIA CLASSROOM CONNECT EXPANDS REACH WITH UNIFIED DISTANCE EDUCATION APPROACH
Written by EDYOU FM Staff on May 15, 2026
A major shift in the Ministry of Education’s approach to nationwide learning outreach unfolded on April 29, 2026, as Classroom Connect transformed the Bamia Multipurpose Hall in Administrative Region Ten into a hub of innovation, collaboration, and hands-on education.
In a significant development, this edition of Classroom Connect was executed jointly by the Guyana Learning Channel and EdYou FM, both operating under the umbrella of the Ministry’s Distance Education Unit. The collaboration marks a strategic move toward consolidating educational outreach efforts, enhancing both delivery and impact across regions.
Adding to the evolution of the programme was the inclusion of primary-level students for the first time. Learners from Grades Four, Five, and Six joined their secondary counterparts, broadening the initiative’s reach and reinforcing the Ministry’s commitment to engaging students at multiple levels of the education system.
Director of the Distance Education Unit, Phillip Williams, underscored the importance of the moment, while acknowledging that continued growth remains essential. He noted that while the event represents meaningful progress for the unit, there is still work to be done in strengthening educational delivery. Williams also highlighted the critical role of monitoring systems in ensuring that broadcast content effectively supports learning outcomes.

Behind the scenes, significant coordination was required to facilitate an event of this scale. Key support came from Regional Education Officer Ms. La Shanna Anderson and Special Education Needs and Disability Officer Ms. Luanna Boyce. Their combined efforts ensured that the initiative was not only successfully executed but also aligned with broader educational goals within the region.
This edition of Classroom Connect recorded its largest turnout to date, with over 100 students participating from six secondary schools: Mackenzie High, New Silvercity Secondary, Linden Foundation Secondary, Christianburg Wismar Secondary, Wisburg Secondary, and Harmony Secondary. The strong attendance reflected growing interest in the initiative, as well as its expanding relevance within the region.

Participants were exposed to a wide range of interactive educational and production-based activities designed to engage both students and teachers. Returning favourites such as Plinko, the Memory Game, Spell It, Animation, and introductory photography sessions continued to capture interest.
However, the unified rollout also introduced several new and dynamic components. Students were given hands-on exposure to Drone Operation, Podcast Setup, Studio Interview Configuration, Lighting Techniques, Live Video Production, and Radio Broadcasting. These additions not only enhanced the experience but also provided practical insight into media and production fields, aligning with the Ministry’s broader push toward skills-based learning.
The continued expansion of Classroom Connect reflects the Ministry of Education’s commitment to innovation, accessibility, and inclusive engagement. By merging resources and introducing new learning opportunities, the Distance Education Unit is positioning itself to better serve students across Guyana.
The initiative is set to continue its outreach, with the next staging scheduled for May 29, 2026, in Region Three at West Demerara Secondary School, located in Vreed-en-Hoop.
