A Hidden Gem in Guyana’s Tourism Landscape

Written by on November 30, 2025

As the month of November comes to an end, marking the close of the month of tourism, it’s a great time to highlight some of Guyana’s hidden treasures. One of those gems is found in Linden, Region 10, affectionately called the heart of Guyana. At the center of showcasing this beauty is Mr. Deon Anderson, a seasoned tour guide and co-founder of Elite Kayaking and Nature Tours, who shares his journey and experiences in tourism.

Exploring Guyana’s Tourism

But before we dive into discovering the hidden gems of Linden it is important to note that Guyana offers a rich and diverse tourism experience, from lush rainforests and vibrant rivers to cultural heritage and ecotourism adventures. Visitors can explore the country’s hinterlands, discover hidden waterfalls, navigate rivers and creeks, and experience the local art, food, and traditions that make each community unique. Tourism not only promotes travel and adventure but also supports local economies, creates jobs, encourages environmental stewardship, and strengthens cultural pride. Linden is a prime example of how a town can shine as a tourism destination while preserving its natural beauty and community spirit.

A Hidden Treasure

Mr. Anderson’s journey started in the most simplest way by exploring his environment. “That journey actually started via, you know, basically just exploring my environment, exploring the beauty of Linden,” he shared. During one of those drives with his cousins, he stumbled upon a blue lake tucked away in Linden. And even though Linden is home to seven blue lakes, this one he emphasized was ‘special’. Located right in the heart of town yet still hidden from the naked eye by lush bushes, it became the spark for what would eventually become Elite Kayaking and Nature Tours. “As soon as we saw it, ideas started springing forth, and we birthed those ideas into reality,” Deon explained.

More Than Just a Tour

“A day with Elite Kayaking and Nature Tours is about more than just kayaking,” Deon exclaimed. Linden is the only region in Guyana where all three main rivers the Essequibo, Demerara, and Berbice flow through, adding to its uniqueness as a tourism spot.  Elite Kayaking and Nature Tours start with a historical overview, sharing the stories behind the communities and the town itself. Guests then get to  explore the landscape, climb hills for panoramic views, and even learn the secret behind the lake’s striking blue waters, a secret revealed only during the tour.

“Kayaking with Elite isn’t just paddling, it’s an experience. Visitors glide from open blue waters into the shaded black waters of Karakara Creek” Deon explained . The tour is carefully designed with music, photos, and safety guidance, creating memories that last long after the tour ends. It’s an experience that combines adventure, relaxation, and learning in one.

Tourism and Community Impact

Tourism is transformative for Linden,  Mr. Anderson highlighted  that  the tours benefit not just guides and lifeguards, but also local transport providers, accommodation services, and eateries. “Once the community begins to see their town as a tourism destination, their mindset changes; they keep the place clean, uphold culture, and become more helpful,” he says.

Guidance for Aspiring Tour Guides

For anyone looking to become a tour guide, Deon says two qualities are essential: being people-oriented and willing to learn. Every tour is a chance to teach and to learn, and each interaction makes the experience better for everyone.

Experience It Yourself

Deon dreams of showing more visitors Linden’s hidden beauty, as the blue lakes offer an experience that’s both accessible and unlike anything else in Guyana. Guests are encouraged to see it for themselves. “It’s an experience that feels like the first time, every time,” he says.

As the month of tourism wraps up, Linden’s hidden gems remind us that tourism isn’t just about visiting a place, it’s about the stories, the experiences, and the people who bring these destinations to life.
